Henri Bourgeois - Le temps des vendanges

It is not without some weariness that we started this morning the last day of harvest under a rather overcast sky and slightly misty. A calm atmosphere floated over the vineyard where we could only hear the noise of the vendangettes (shears) at each grape cutting... A bit like if this great family who lived together for 3 weeks had been touched by a melancholic and nostalgic feeling.

The three last single vineyards which were harvested are located on the south-western / southern sides of the slopes of Chavignol which argilo-limestone soil left the earth, still wet (from the rains of the previous week nights), "in love" ( ie stucked to the grape-pickers boots).

This evening is meant to be a very festive atmosphere since we will gather to celebrate the end of the harvest: "the panful".

Ce n’est pas sans fatigue que nous avons entamé ce matin la dernière journée de vendange sous un ciel plutôt couvert et légèrement brumeux. Un certain calme régnait dans les rangs de vigne où l’on entendait que le bruit des vendangettes (sécateurs) à chaque coupe de raisins… Un peu comme si cette grande famille qui a vécu ces 3 semaines ensemble était touchée d’une émotion mélancolique et nostalgique.

Les trois dernières parcelles qui ont été cueillies se situent sur des flancs sud sud-ouest des coteaux de Chavignol dont le sol argilo-calcaire rendait la terre, encore humide (des pluies des nuits de la semaines dernière), « amoureuse » (elle collait aux bottes des vendangeurs).

Ce soir sera d’une ambiance très festive puisque nous nous rassemblerons pour fêter le fin des vendanges : la poêlée.
